Why Will Thousands Of Plane Trees Be Phased Out In Sydney?

Plane trees are to be phased out in Sydney’s parks and streets and replaced with more drought-tolerant species. Sydney's avenues of plane trees have their new leaves for spring and will provide much-needed shade in the city's concrete jungle for an expected hot El Niño-charged summer. But the London plane trees also draw the ire of hayfever sufferers as their trichomes grow and take flight, setting off allergy-related symptoms. The trees are the second most common species (after brush box) across the City of Sydney but under a new plan they will eventually become a thing of the past. What do you think LiveTribers? Why will thousands of plane trees be phased out in Sydney?

For decades, trees, notably plane trees, have bestowed us with shade and served as vital air purifiers, partcularly in the smog-laden atmosphere of Sydney. Rather than contemplating concrete substitutes, it is imperative to recognize their ecological advantages. Despite allergy considerations, endorsing the conservation of tres reflects an acknowledgment of their pivotal role in fostering a more sustainable environment.

trees are tress and have given us shade for years. As for allergy suffers well to be political correct we should rip out all plants and replace with concrete lookalikes. Are we a nanny country or one of adults who can stand and decide for themselves...Trees especially plane trees trap a lot of garbage from the air in smoggy old sydney and we should be grateful for them

Maybe the local government would like to put some exotic atmosphere to the city.

Native trees are best. Foreign introduced trees are never the answer.

They are inappropriate trees to grow in areas where they can cause allergic reactions in people. They should have been removed years ago and something more suitable grown to replace them. Victoria has been replacing them with more suitable trees for several years. Sydney is just playing catchup.

Plane trees are a health hazard. The fruit has tiny filaments on them that cause respiratory and eye irritation when airborne. This is not an allergic reaction as some would believe but the irritation that small particulates can cause. Good riddance and lets hope their replacements don't cause new health issues.
