Why Is Weight Training So Essential For Women Over 50?

Resistance training is essential for maintaining both bone health and muscle loss in the face of declining hormone levels, says one doctor (UCL Medicine) on the importance of exercise for women going through menopause. It has a wide range of health benefits, particularly for older women like boosting your metabolism to improving your stability. One third of people over 65 fall each year with a common cause being poor muscle strength. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why is weight training so essential for women over 50?

It's not essential at all. My mum and female grandparents didn't need it. Just walking and housework was enough for them. You based this on the opinion of one doctor. How ignorant a comment. Keeping fit helps at any age. Don't forget that as people get older they can't do as much exercise as when younger. There are also other reasons why some women become weaker over 65, age just being one reason. Lifting weights won't stop the aging process.

We lose muscle as we age. Muscles are not only for carrying groceries but for climbing stairs, getting up off of chairs, and maintaining balance. Important for everyone.

As we age our bodies deteriorate, weight training not only keeps you fit but also keeps muscles from weakening, giving you both strength and stability. Keeping fit is beneficial not only physically but mentally too, joining a class can also be a great place to socialise with other people of the same age.

Because of all the changes in the body as a result of menopause, it seems like it is extra beneficial at this stage of women's lives.

I’m 38 and have never been a fan of weight training. I’ve always loved cardio and it’s the only thing that keeps me in shape. But I do integrate body weight training into my daily workouts. And I throw in the odd barbell workout, I think it does help to keep you strong.

Resistance training is fantastic for hormonal homeostasis! In a time where women experience menopause and lower hormonal production resistance training helps for stimulation of estrogen and testosterone which In turn assists in strengthening bones!

Staying strong as we get old is an effective way to maintain good health and independence for longer. Both aerobic and weight bearing exercises are beneficial. Thank you for reminding me of this.

Many people fall over because they are very thin and frail. Repeated falls normally means you have to go to a nursing home, as it is no longer safe for you to remain at home by yourself. Doing weight training and being a good weight helps you to be stronger and more physically active. My grandparents are 90 and over and still live at home, with some support eg cleaning and meals on wheels.

From whatI understand, weight training helps to strengthen bones, and when women got through menopause, it can lead to a deterioration of bone density. (the same happens to all as we get older, just more rapid in women).

I've noticed a significant decrease in my muscle strength as I've aged and I think this sounds like a great idea. I walk regularly and do a lot of outdoor activities but I definitely need more. Thanks, you've motivated me!

weight training is very much essential for women over 50 because to maintain a healthy and independent like without depending upon others for physical support. As we grew older less and less physical support we will get. Children will busy in their life so if we will not physically strong then who is going to take care of us.
