The South China Sea is one of the most disputed regions in the world. Different countries claim ownership of islands and reefs here. Furthermore, as a crossroads linking the Pacific and Indian oceans, the South China Sea has trade routes worth over $3 trillion a year which carries a third of all global shipping. Nonetheless, China claims most of it but surrounding countries and the US disagree. As tension is building and the area is becoming a regional flashpoint, consequences could be felt around the world.
