Why Have Thousands Of Donors To Australian Charities Have Data Leaked To Dark Web?

Thousands of donors to Australian charities have had their personal information leaked to the dark web after a telemarketer was hacked by cybercriminals. The ABC understands more than 70 Australian charities used Brisbane-based Pareto Phone, but not all had been affected. The telemarketing company collected donations from supporters, with one charity alleging the company retained nine-year-old documents without its knowledge, which would be a breach of the privacy act. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why have thousands of donors to Australian Charities have data leaked to dark web?

Yet another example of an organisation failing to treat data and the security of information appropriately. The problem just continues to bubble along

Maybe someone can say who hacked Optus? It was November 7 in Moscow, the 106 anniversary of the "great" revolution in Russia...

This is a joke. I am sick of companies (and charities) not having adequate protections in place for the data it collects.

I have had numerous calls from people claiming to be doing a survey on charities. They ask you who you would donate to. At the end they ask for your name. If you give this (which I stupidly did once), you start receiving numerous requests for money from many different charities. Some of the people conducting the survey are quite obnoxious. If you tell them you are not interested, they just talk over you. I have learned to just hang up on them now.

telemarketers need a job, however, not at the expense of being a total nuisance. if one says no then no it is, but that is never good enough so end up saying bye bye bye bye hanging up now - as Australians are allegedly rude so say bye

With so many charities and scammers ringing, we no longer answer our home telephone. If someone is legitimately trying to call us they will leave a message.

Oh, I have not heard this. That is pretty sick. Unprofessional conduct by the telemarketing company as well. It deserves to lose its licence.

Data security will not improve until such time as entities and their senior staff face strong financial penalties for their inaction and/or stupidity.

It's a disgrace. Someone got hold of my credit number and went on a $4000 spending spree but fortunately my bank caught it. Thes companies with loose security should have to face some consequences.

It's all big business, it's all about the mighty dollar, even charities using telemarketers to raise funds which is unfortunate. These telemarketing companies must be held to account for breaches that lead to consumers personal information being leaked to the dark web.

I have long been disappointed that Australian charities use telemarketing to get donations. The staff get paid to solicit money and then if someone does donate, they are barraged with letters asking for more. The postage and telemarketer wages would exceed the donations in many cases. It put me off donating or buying raffle tickets and this makes it even worse.

Did they get paid for the information? I have recently been made aware that my information was sold to telemarketers. I did not give my permission for this and I am sure this information has also found its way to the dark web as well. When telemarketers ring do you ever ask HOW they got your phone number? Some are forthcoming with information others just hang up immediately.

Scammers use the information to target unwary people out of savings and promise incredible things to make it seem real, don't be fooled, check the credibility of anyone asking for money, no matter who it appears to be.

Data breaches are getting out of hand for and feed the continuous scams we are all receiving…whilst banks and other institutions just duck for cover saying it was your fault!!!

When private charities get a donation they do not need any private information. If asked for it don't supply. Simple. Charities will stop asking if support dries up.

Poor data security and practices in general by either the company themselves or a third party, generally due to lack of spending and investment in security
