Why Have Hire E-Scooters Been Banned In Melbourne?

After years of trials, the City of Melbourne has voted to end a commercially operated e-scooter share scheme. Councilors cited safety concerns raised by residents and lawlessness of e-scooter users as reasons for the decision. The main concern that had arisen from Ballarat's scooter trial was how riders left the scooters once their ride was done. People just leave them or thrown across footpaths or just on nature strips in inappropriate locations. That's probably the largest of the frustrations that our community has experienced. What are your thoughts? Why have E-Scooters been banned in Melbourne?

I agree to banning hired scooters - dangerous on roads and hazard to pedestrians whilst a nuisance being left around everywhere you look!

Technical issues are still not fixed that have been with LiveTribe for more than 2 years? very bad... Dear LiveTribe Members, The technical glitch that is inadvertently redeeming points or unsubscribing accounts without member initiation has not stopped. Due to its reoccurrence we will be disabling redemptions from Friday 30th August 2024 - Friday 13th September 2024 inclusive. Thank you for your understanding, The LiveTribe Team

The only e-scooters that should be allowed are private ones, and no hire ones. Everywhere I go in Hobart I see them lying on the streets, people with a disability and or aged should not have to be run down by them, and or be able to have easy access to get around, without these devices in their way taking over footpaths. Time that people use their own two feet and properly exercise, so many people also end up in hospital because of these devices, because of being either hit, and or as a rider

It's the same problem in Adelaide, irresponsible users. Pedestrians are not safe what with bikes, scooters and gophers on pavements but our state mob won't ban the scooters more's the pity. Who is going to pay compensation when people are injured? Good on Melbourne for having some common sense.

Here on the gold coast between the bikes and scooters the footpaths are blocked, idiots hitting people especially the older person, leave them everywhere from the beach to peoples lawns and in gutters etc. They are a menace. It takes days to collect them also and I live 2 ks from the beach but we can have up to 8 left in our street every day.

People leave them all over the place, they are dangerous to pedestrians and are simply a nuisance with the riders pests.

The people using them often don't worry about other people's safety or the road rules. They speed along the footpath and expect pedestrians to get out of the way. Many don't wear helmets. I have seen two people on one scooter, both not wearing helmets. They dump them anywhere when they have finished with them.

E-scooters have been banned due to ongoing irresponsible, dangerous use.

A lot of the people that use them have no regard for the pedestrians on the footpath who are walking along minding their own business. They are left all around the streets, dumped in creeks, lakes and in gutters in my area. I often see people riding them with no helmets even though they are supplied with them when you get on to ride them, dinking and disobeying the road rules. I've also seen people riding them running red lights! I rode one once and never again, I fell off when I hit a pot hole, I was ok, just cut and bruised my knee but I did not feel safe riding them, I would much rather ride a bike!

The main reason was the idiots using them. They travel much too fast and speed down footpaths as if they owned them. There's been at least one fatality caused by escooters plus a large number of injuries to both riders and pedestrians. It's not only a Melbourne ban, bans are being introduced in Europe also. Footpaths are exactly that. Paths for foot traffic (pedestrians). For once the tree huggers in Melbourne council have listened to the people living there.

Yes it's a huge problem. Here in Sydney as well. Perhaps put a deposit payment in the mix something similar to what shopping carts have but a much larger sum only redeemable when the bike is returned.
