Why Has A Western Australian Pastoralist taken Fight To Commonwealth Over Phase-Out Of Live Sheep Exports?

When the federal government banned Australia's live cattle trade to Indonesia in 2011, one pastoral business was severely impacted. And while this business is not involved in the sheep industry, the owner is preparing to fight the government's plan to end the live sheep export trade. The owner has said that he will always fight for accountability in government when he saw the collapse of his business in 2011. He says, “Now is the time to make a stand as a community. It’s not just farmers, it’s all the communities that are going to get hurt”. What do you think LiveTribers? Why has a Western Australian pastoralist taken fight to commonwealth over phase-out of live sheep exports?

Financial interests, rather than the health of animals

Economic interests certainly trump over ethical consideration

He seems to know the difference between animals & GMOs which are artificially produced.

Certainly not because he cares about animal welfare!

He has been severely affected by the ban on live exports. His farm profits have significantly dropped. Good on him for standing up for what he believes in.

If we don't supply the meat someone else will. It would be great if people understood that the places where we send animals on live export, do NOT have the same level of refrigeration available as we do in Australia. In these countries, people go to the meat market/butcher every day or 2 for fresh meat as they don't have fridges or freezers. the choice for these countries is usually live export or no meat purchased.

While it's unfortunate that the sheep farmers and communities will suffer due the banning of live exports. It will hopefully only be temporary and industries will hopefully develop such as packing the meat for export.

I think we should prepare the sheep here in Australia instead forcing the poor sheep to endure the long voyage in cramped unsanitary and poor conditions. Plus you can’t guarantee their welfare when they arrive at their destination. Some very sick people out there.

Because his business has been impacted by the ban.

Because he and most sensible people understand that we have NO control on the cruelty of slaughter methods in any other countries. If we do not supply them due to our squeamishness then other producers will to our economies detriment. The real World outside of Western woke softcocks is very different to our helicopter parenting utopia. People need protein to survive and we produce it in spades!

As mact said, if we don't supply other countries with live sheep someone else will. Australia makes good money from its exports and with the debt we are in we need every cent we can earn. It's about time we stopped listening to these loud mouth minority wokes and used common sense for a change.
