Why Can Too Much Air-Conditioning Make It Harder To Cope With Extreme Heat?

A new study has found that taking an afternoon nap could be more effective in combating hot weather than cranking up the aircon. Non-Indigenous people in the Northern Territory are spending more time in air-conditioned comfort than ever before but have become more susceptible to heat-related deaths. According to the recent study published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal, non-Indigenous Australians are 18 per cent more likely to die during a hot stretch of days than at other times. However, Indigenous Territorians, despite having more severe health disadvantages overall, do not have an increased risk of death during heat waves as they have developed ways to better withstand hot weather. What do you think LiveTribers? Why can too much air-conditioning make it harder to cope with extreme heat?

Too much cool air from the air con isn't good because the air circulation is just getting polluted within a confined space in a room. If you are talking about a living room with large open space, then the air con must be a very powerful unit in order to generate substantial low temperature in order to cool down such large area. Your body simply adapt the cooler temperature better than warmer temperatures hence it is likely that those people with less tolerance for hotter temperature, will likely have negative impact on their bodies.

air conditioners are the bane of modern homes and offices. People do not acclimatise as we did prior to AC in schools, work, home, car etc. It was hot, we drank water, we sat in the shade, some had fans with a wet sheet draped over a chair so the coolness was fanned out. We are a sissy lot now and so catch so many more virus's and bacterial infections - no internal immunity.

I definitely think we have become too reliant on air-conditioning. It's nice to have but best to save it for only the really hot days. I know some who have it on every day in summer. The added bonus for using it in moderation is a huge saving in power costs and the environment.

I agree with the comments below that the problem is people are too reliant on air-conditioning and run it inefficently by inverting the guidelines of 18 degrees C in winter and 25 degrees C in summer

I love people who claim to love summer but are normally the first to crank up the air conditioning. Yeah right, you really really love summer! You’re only exacerbating a very dire situation. Good work!

We are becoming accustomed to relying on air-con when it is barely hot. It is like any sort of other technology that rely on everyday when it is not really essential

I think it's about getting too used to a "fake" temperature, hen our body can't cope with the "real" temperature.

I don't think too much air conditioning is good for anyone, but I also think that some people cope with the heat better than others. I would expected people who have lived in those conditions for generations would have more tolerance

Because they are indigenous. Many of us have Anglo white ancestry and it makes us more susceptible to the effects of heat and the sun. Some of us are better suited to cooler environments. I don't live in the NT and I don't think I'd be able to cope. I burn to easily for a start. I don't believe air conditioning has the effect that you claimed. If you have to cool down it's important for your health. Having a nap is ok, but would be a bit hard and uncomfortable if your property is like an oven.

In todays over electric world most people on days over 25degrees have their air cons set too LOW. Leave all a/cs at 23degrees in hot weather and in colder weather set at 18deg. And dress appropriately...... you'll save heaps and stay healthier..... simple really???

This is a no brainer. When I went to school the days were just as hot as they are now but we didn't have air-conditioning and we survived. It's all about becoming acclimatized and you can't do that with the air-con on.

Yep and no heaters either in Melbourne schools back in the 50's and 60's and pre this time also of course. As older it gets harder to deal with the extremes. I have my air con on but not constant. I just cool the rooms down a bit. I do not own a heater in Qld.

With the cost of electricity rising better to try anything else to keep cool. A pool helps.

Yes but you have water costs and running costs of the filter etc. Cheaper to have an air con.

People under air-conditioning don't acclimatise to the heat so it shocks and stresses the body going in and out of air con environments to hot ones. The heart rate may suddenly increase.

The more comforts you get accustomed to, the harder it is to give them up. I didn't grow up with aircon. We didnt even have a fan at school and teachers had at least 30 kids in the class. Nobody passed out. Actually the kids didn't even complain that it was too hot to think or learn. In extreme heat we were allowed to leave class and get an extra drink at the bubblers. Lunch time we still ran around. But its not just air con, its everything in society today. Too many have become too soft and complain easily. They wouldn't have lasted in the great depression, wars, famines etc.

People are just too soft nowadays. The same as when it's cold, it's just a matter of adapting and using common sense. I can't remember the last time we used the aircon in our house. We dress to suit the weather and don't do stupid things such as go outside in the heat of the day and in winter we rug up if necessary.

i think the reliance on air con makes people less able to regulate their own body temperature and withstand warmer weather. they also forget to drink more in hot weather as they feel cooler, so when they do step out in hot weather they are greater risk of being dehydrated etc
