Why Are Strong Winds And Blizzard Conditions Hitting Tasmania?

Eight people were rescued from a blizzard on a Tasmanian mountain, authorities said, as extreme weather wreaked havoc across the state. Authorities said two of the walkers, a 27-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were very lucky to be alive and are currently being treated in hospital for hypothermia. The cold front is travelling north up the Australian mainland, causing large swells along the coast. What do you think LiveTribers? Why are strong winds and blizzard conditions hitting Tasmania?

All the weather fronts seem to be going a lot lower than they have in previous years. South Australia used to get most of the same weather Perth got but nowadays it all seems to go lower to Tasmania

Tasmania is a wonderful place, even with our weather, we have still been quite lucky, we have not had the weather events of our mainland states, floods after flood. The problem is that too many people do not adhere to and listen to the experts, who tell you how to get ready and make sure you take certain things that will help with your safety. If people were more prepared, then we would not have as many people go missing and are more safe

It's the typical time of year when our Tassie winter bites. We have a lot of travellers visiting and some really do not know our weather can be extreme.

It’s quite far down south, and known for its extreme cold conditions

I used to live in Queenstown, on the West coast of Tasmania, it’s not for everyone, but I found the cold and occasional snow exhilarating

There are unusual weather patterns developing over the Indian Ocean and heading to the West of Australia. An uncommon event but apparently not unheard of in our past history.

This happens every year in the high country. However there are places around Hobart where it is extremely pleasant, warmer than on the mainland and sunny for almost all day. In fact they are praying for rain for their gardens.

It's normal winter weather. What's not formal is bloody fools walking around in it. You can get that weather on Mt Wellington in summer.

It's bloody winter in the Southern Hemisphere! It's NORMAL to be cold and icy in Tasmania in winter. Only fools would venture out in the Tassie wilderness, young, inexperienced and poorly prepared. Believe me I'm a committed Bush Walker and would be VERY reluctant to walk in Tassie in Winter...... unless very knowledgeable and well prepared. Still as a retired Paramedic NOTHING about human stupidity ever surprises me.....and kept me in a job over 30 years!! Commonsense is an uncommon trait in modern Aussies!

Because it's winter! What else do you expect? Anyone wanting to go bush walking in Tassie's winter without having years of experience needs their head read, especially with a 16-year-old.
