Why Are Eastern Grey Kangaroos More ‘Human’ Than We Thought?

New research indicates eastern grey kangaroos may develop friendships that span years and the mothers enjoy being part of friendly groups. Researchers have found eastern grey kangaroos have similar social lives to humans. Kangaroos had maintained friendships with the same individuals over consecutive years and this was exciting because there hasn't been any evidence for long-term friendships in kangaroos before. Female kangaroos sought out companionship with each other, but male kangaroos only seemed to be interested in one thing and tend to develop friendships to have access to more females to breed with. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are eastern grey kangaroos more ‘human’ than we thought?

This is very interesting, Nature is so fascinating and i love learning about it. As other people have said, we underestimate animals.

Also, Magpies mate for life and if one of the pair dies or is hit by a car its mate will often stay close at hand for long periods. Therefore are Magpies more human than we thought?

This research is fascinating as I live on a bush property with a lot of these Kangaroos. I have often wondered about their social groups. To be honest, I think humans are more like animals. We underestimate that.

It doesn't surprise me as I have often seen groups of females laying around together, perhaps they are 'ladies who lunch?' I also had to laugh about the males with only one thing on their minds, definitely more human than we thought, I had the image of a crowd of blokes down the pub.

It is no mystery that Humans assume animals have no feelings. We are an arrogant species!

I have no idea! I think this research money could be better spent on other things other than worrying about the social lives of Kangas. Saving endangered species would be better.
