Why Are Bunnings, Kmart And The Good Guys Using Facial Recognition Technology To Crack Down On Theft?

Consumer group says use of technology at major retailers is ‘completely inappropriate and unnecessary’. Bunnings, Kmart and The Good Guys have been using facial recognition technology in a bid to crack down on theft in-store. The consumer group said it asked 25 of Australia’s largest retailers whether they were using facial recognition technology and examined their privacy policies. Based on that investigation, it said the three appeared to be the only retailers among that group who were using the technology. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are Bunnings, Kmart and The Good Guys using facial recognition technology to crack down on theft?

It’s all part of bigger things, it’s not for theft.

They (and not only they) are asked and pushed to do it. Everyone must be traced.

Well, it is just those people who steal that make things worse for the rest of us. If only everyone did the correct thing then prices would be lower (less theft stopping prices from going up) and there would be no need for cameras.

I don't mind at all, but what I do mind, is that the innocent people, or people who may be visctim of a bad programme, may have theri information stored and then exposed to someone it's not meant to be seen by. Or they will use it for other purposes. If they catch someone stealing, scan their face, and then identify them when they come in again, no worries.

I hope they have the database of all the adherents to the MURDEROUS IDEOLOGY of ISLAM so that another Lindt Cafe style attack can be stopped. Please read Quran 8:12 then 4:74

It is a sign of the times for business nowadays unfortunately, people will steal beacuse they either can't afford the item, or they just want to steal it anyway, so because of this the business are resorting to surveilance cameras, such as facial recognition, although I do wonder if they actually employ people to watch these camera's and have security in the stores to apprehend offenders after being seen on them.

I understand that they have to protect their businesses from theft but i feel this is a bit too far. How about they employ more people to be in store to detour people from stealing and go back to actually having staff serve customers instead of self service check outs.

I agree wholeheartedly - take the self service checkouts away and employ more people!!!!

This is shouldn't be allowed as not everyone is comfortable with this due to privacy concerns. If you don't trust people then remove self check outs.

If you have done nothing wrong then I cant see that it is a problem. Theft is becoming more and more prevalent and companies just cannot continue to wear the costs of stolen goods. The more theft the more the prices will rise. There will come a day when there are no shops, everything will be online. Welcome to the new way of life.

As is always the case, Australia follows the American way of doing things. Every time there is a new introduction on anything from the Today show to News productions we follow suit. Why Australia has to compete with the American way of doing things I do not fathom. Why can we not come up with our own creations and not be so enamoured with the US way of doing things? However, I do believe that the introduction of Facial Recognition is the way of the future and will be soon part of life for all people in every country. Just like everything else that we balked at over the decades, no matter what we do or how hard we retaliate, this is inevitable and in all honesty, I believe, necessary.

I'm more concerned about my personal privacy being made public especially when criminal elements are always looking for easy access to ones private information for personal gains.

It seems that public opinion has been against them and I was reading on my newsfeed that this is being discontinued.

Wake up people, this is a globalist take over in progress. Agenda by the WEF to track your every move. What really grates me is they never told anyone before hand and they say they informed people with a tiny A4 piece of paper place somewhere on the outside of the store. I will be boycotting shopping in store. And anyone thinks they will delete the data is fooling themselves they will keep it on file forever, use it for other purposes and make money off it. Please everyone educate yourself about what is really going on in the world before it is too late. Adelaide was the only smartest to resist it. We will turn into a communist country before you know it.

I am all for stores doing what they can to curb theft. Having worked in retail myself years back it was a constant problem. On many occasions after catching shop lifters you were never sure of getting proper redress but happy to retrieve your stock. I hope we don't become as frustrated as the U.S. currently where thieves are never prosecuted. With photo security an alarm can alert store personnel to the presence of a known shop stealer on the premises..

Stealing is wrong, shoplifting is theft ! Any business has the right to deter illegal behaviour. In my view any video footage should be deleted after 30days if their had been no consequences of customer behaviour. If humans behaved honestly this topic would be redundant!!!!

I'm really shocked by this, I had no idea they were doing this. I feel it's an invasion of privacy. I know theft can drive prices up but I don't think this is the way to handle it.

Because it’s mainly the same culprits that continue to steal items and think their getting away with it that’s there job and cost us more money

Big brother is watching. I understand theft is a huge problem but they should look at putting something on the items that cannot be removed until it goes through the checkouts.

Shoplifting is a massive problem to shop owners these days, so if you don't do anything wrong, you don't get caught. It should encourage people to do the right thing.
