Why Are Australian Universities Being Accused Of Awarding Degrees To Students With No Grasp Of ‘Basic’ English?

Academics say universities have turned a blind eye to language shortcomings because of the revenue generated from international student fees. International students who cannot speak “basic English” are walking away from Australian universities with prestigious degrees, academics say, a situation one described as “mind-blowing”. More than a dozen academics and students said the universities’ financial reliance on foreign students over many years had hollowed out academic integrity and threatened the international credibility of the sector. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are Australian universities being accused of awarding degrees to students with no grasp of ‘basic’ english?

Education is big business and there is money to be made. It is not just universities, check the level of passing in high schools these days - it's scary. Employers beware!

Why are Australian universities being accused of awarding degrees to students with no grasp of ‘basic’ english? Because they get lots of money for doing it. Top University executives get paid up to 1 million a year, they'll do anything to keep their jobs including giving non English speaking people a pass.

What does this say about our education programs? That the degrees aren't worth the paper they're printed on. It makes a mockery of legitimate students taking on ridiculously expensive HECS debts that will take a lifetime to repay if they're able to at all. Degrees should not be for sale or given to the highest bidder, they should be earnt and if you can't earn it in the language used in the country you're studying in, then you don't deserve it. Any university found "selling" degrees should have their certification taken away and their assets sold off.

It is obviously about the money they receive. I know of an Australian who attended an Australian university and their class was placed into groups. They put one English speaking student with 4-6 non-English speaking students from overseas. He was expected to help them with their classwork and studies and ensure that they passed. He naturally found it very difficult. I never heard whether he and the others passed and this was some time ago.

This is very true, Universitys only inetersted in big money from foreign students, dont care about outcomes. Why are overseas students allowed to get visa if they cant speak or understand English. Corrupt Labor bringing in millions of immigrants to boost their woefull handling of the economy, absolutly disgracefull. Shows that Unis are led by woke, left wing academics

It is all about the money, they have to fund the universities because our Government does not provide enough funding (or it gets wasted?)

It was reported than classes have been done speaking Mandarin and English speaking students were left without education in these classes although they were paying for them. Our children first and then yes some overseas students but lets get the balance in favour of our own for once. Perhaps the fees of certain academics needs to be investigated to see what worth they actually are.
