Why Are All The Fish Shrinking?

Fish are the most diverse group of vertebrates, ranging from tiny gobies and zebrafish to gigantic tunas and whale sharks. They provide vital sustenance to billions of people worldwide via fisheries and aquaculture and are critical parts of aquatic ecosystems. But fish around the world have declined in size as water temperatures warm, but the reason why is poorly understood. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are all the fish shrinking?

I think environmental change plays an important part in it. Human has been systematically building the fishing industry for years. Most fish would not have the chance to grow properly before they get caught.

I had no idea about this. Maybe because of all the toxicity of waste accumulated in the water.

Maybe due to lack of food and /or the pollution in the oceans?

Because sharks and humans are over eating and overfishing. Given time most tropically sourced fish are faster growing and larger than their temperate and colder latitude counterparts. Greedy overfishing by Dutch Super trawlers are not helping!!!

simply over fishing. some standards need to change for sustainability.

One of Queensland's last remaining commercial shark fishermen warns shark numbers in north Queensland are "out of control". Sharks have also survived many climate changes over their 450 million years of existence. Sharks eat fish.

There is less food around for them to eat and the oceans are all fished out so probably younger fish are being caught these days. Perhaps all the pollution has something to do with it too!

Here in Australia we have record numbers of crocodile's and sharks, elsewhere in the world there are large numbers of whales as well as Polar bears and they all eat fish, so perhaps the larger fish are all being eaten by larger predators.

Over fishing as fish take quite a few years to grow in time
