Which Worn-Out Clothes Make The Best Cleaning Rags?

It’s hard to avoid the news about the mountains of textile waste we send to landfill every year. However, the question of what to do with old clothes is a tough one. Landfill is a terrible place for them because they are made of precious resources and most won’t biodegrade for decades or longer. Ideally, we should sell or donate our old clothes, but this is only possible (or helpful for charities) if the garments are still wearable and desirable. When you’re cleaning, a certain amount of absorption is needed. For this reason, it is recommended that ragging garments made from soft natural fibres such as cotton is best and steer clear of anything that’s polyester or synthetic because it just doesn’t absorb as well”. What do you think LiveTribers? Which worn-out clothes make the best cleaning rags?

I use pretty much all my old clothes as rags when I'm finished with them unless they are in good enough condition to donate to an Op Shop. I find t-shirts work the best.

Old flannelette shirts make really good cleaning rags. My Mum always did this in the 70's - never saw her buy cleaning cloths.

Plenty of old clothes etc make great cleaning, polishing & general use rags. Old jocks, singlets & flanny shirts are the best but old towells, sheets, & pillow cases have many multiple uses as well

Old flannel rags are great for washing cars, windows and shiny or glossy surfaces. Whilst old fleece rags are gentler and better suited for cleaning delicate tech equipment, like screens and monitors.

Old tea towels as the size is great and they are soft and absorbable. I use them for many jobs around the house.

Old cotton singlets are great for cleaning and polishing furniture. Old socks are great for polishing shoes. Polyester and nylons can be woven into mats/rugs.

Definitely old cotton underwear, stretchy t shirts, flanalette PJ's. Other uses for old clothes that can't be re purposed or re made into new clothes, is stuffing pillows, make a dog bed by sewing two beach towels together and stuff it with old clothes, make totes bags for groceries. And the best thing we can all do is don't buy them in the first place. :)

If they are in good enough condition I pass on my clothes to thrift shops. If they are rough and worn out I cut up old towels, bedding, t shirts and other clothes and use them for cleaning rags around home.

Old face washers are the best for me. They absorb everything and are already the perfect size, plus they are hemmed so they don't fray.

Old tshirts are the best for cleaning. I give old towels to local vets. Any clothes that are past being worn and aren't good for cleaning, I'm saving up to make a rag rug for the dogs kennel.

T-shirts, singlets and pyjamas are my favourites but most things can be used, especially natural fibres. Socks are great for cleaning/dusting skirting boards. And I have a jar full of buttons cut from shirts and pyjamas so they don't scratch anything. They do come in handy sometimes
