Should The Justice Reform Initiative Entail More Community Support To Bring Change To The Justice System?

A group focused on addressing the alarming number of people in Australian jails has called for more supporters. Justice Reform Initiative chairman Robert Tickner and executive director Mindy Sotiri say they want to change the conversation about who is jailed and why. In Australia, there are about 40,000 people behind bars, the highest rate in a century, and have among the highest incarceration rates in the world. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Should The Justice Reform Initiative Entail More Community Support To Bring Change To The Justice System?

Well it's an embarrassment for Australia to have so many people in jail, but we are no different to the US as there jail population keeps on growing, but they have many times our population. I think lack of discipline in the family home, schools, and little self respect. Also we are importing more criminals through immigration.

I think there are such a large number of people in jail these days because so many people have never been taught respect for the law or for other people. Too many people are taught "if it feels good, do it". They don't think of the harm they are causing other people and in fact don't care. Too many young people commit very serious crimes and are allowed out on the street immediately after being charged and often go on to commit the same crime over and over. They know that nothing serious will happen to them because they are young. They need to be taught that their wrong actions will have serious consequences for them. Some parents are to blame here because they do not discipline their children and allow them to run wild. In fact, some of the parents were never disciplined as children either, so we have generations of people who think they can do what they like, regardless of how much they hurt other people. If a first-time offender has a good chance of rehabilitation, then by all means give them that chance, but don't let someone free who constantly reoffends, no matter how young they are.

Yes we welcome reforms to the Justice System. As far too many indigenous people are being incarcerated at cost to the tax payer. Conversation from all sections of the community would be welcomed including Social Welfare, Legal and Government bodies plus the general public associated with these models and programs.

Are Aboriginal people being charged with crimes they didn't do?

We need to start electing Magistrates & Judges , not political appointment of mates into the system . Nothing will ever change until the views of the average person in the street are taken into account in the sentencing process .

It may sound paradoxical and disengenuos but greedy, smart arse lawyers who often go on to become barristers of similar vein and then become virtually untouchable and out of touch Magistrates and Judges are much of the problem with our so called Justice System. In many issues only the Wealthy Elite can afford to buy Justice regardless of their obvious often two faced motives and the Lawyer Class and their Political Mates who perpetuate the entire sham. Despite all the pontificating b/s spoken about how good our Aussie Life is, there is no doubt in my mind Justice in Australia depends on who you know and your bank balance. Still an improvement on living in China, North Korea,Burma or Russia!!!!

We need to ask ourselves: How has Society changed to make disproportionate increases in people being gaoled. Is Society too lenient? Is Society too lax in teaching respect towards other people and their property? Many questions to ask and that need answering.

My family have a few experiences with being the victim of crime. It seems that generally the police do a very good job of catching the criminals, but the legal and justice system lets them down. My elderly grandmother was held up for 8 hours at night in a terrifying and armed home invasion. They stole all of her money and car and held a gun to her head. The two people were initially bailed and they then held another person hostage with a gun as soon as they got out of jail with the man being put in the car boot. The lady received only 18 months jail and the man 3 years. Other times my husband has been pushed into glass by four men at a shop at the show and another man pulled a knife on him at the shopping centre. All these people were not charged and are free to be in the community. The man that knifed him was searched by a security guard who let him go free after not finding the knife. So yes, I do believe that the justice system is too lenient. The people who do these sorts of things should be jailed so that the community can be protected. I do not want anybody else to go through what we have gone through.
