Should Australia Have A Bill Of Rights?


Australia is the only Western Democracy without a Charter or Bill of Human Rights. All countries with legal and political systems similar to Australia have a Bill or Charter of Human Rights. And there’s not much to stop the Government from introducing laws that take away our fundamental rights and freedoms. Our current system is not effective enough and a Bill of Rights would promote the protection of human rights by clarifying the rights held by individuals in Australia. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Should Australia have a Bill of Rights?

    Yes, isn't it odd that we are the only one? What were our forefathers thinking? It's a disgrace actually! However, if we had a bill of rights implemented today...I very much doubt it would be a good one. I don't trust the two major parties.

    Yes we should have a Bill of Rights but it should be a bill of rights and responsibilities. You can't have one without the other. We should have freedom of speech but we also have the responsibility to be honest and not use it for evil.

    Ultimately a so called Bill of Rights will lead to a similar litigious lawyers free for all as in USA......no thanks. Our very dour and basic English Grounded Constitution continues to serve us well .... ditto......NO to any form of bloody Republic !!!
