How Is The Art Of Cutting Carbon Celebrating New Ways Of Reducing CO2?

Scientists have invented a magical gadget that sucks the ink off printer paper so each sheet can be used 10 times over. They aim to cut the amount of planet-heating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the paper and pulp industry by reducing demand for office paper. The trick to the so-called "de-printer" is specially coated paper, which stops ink (or powdered toner) from soaking into the page. A powerful laser then vaporises the ink. Lead developer, Barak Yekutiely from Reep Technologies in Israel, describes it as circular printing. We must stop cutting down so many trees if we really care about the planet. What do you think LiveTribers? How is the art of cutting carbon celebrating new ways of reducing CO2?

Well, Good on them for developing this; I am interested to know more. What is the paper coating made from? Is it biodegradable? Is the cost of the coating, both environmental and financial, factored into the cut in CO2 emissions? I operate on the 4 R's and keep discovering new ways to reduce CO2.

Yeah... How much dirty power does it cost to "clean" the paper?

I would love to use this technique. I currently make sure that each side of the paper sheet is well used before I then throw it out. An area of the sheet that has no printing on it is cut out so I then use it as my shopping list. The one sheet is used multiple times before I put it into the bin.

It sounds good but how many people or businesses would actually bother to de-print used specially coated paper as long as they can afford to purchase normal paper?

Haha maybe we should all breathe in CO2 and breathe out oxygen.

I wonder if the vaporisation of the ink will cause any other pollution issues?

CO2 is what plants breathe and they exhale Oxygen which humans need to live, we also need CO2 to make us breathe, not enough and we stop breathing, is this what the end game of the Greenies is the death of mankind? Google Medieval Warming Period then Little Ice Age. Climate change is natural! Climate change made the Coal, Gas and Oil that we use today and not a human living. Who will they blame for that Climate change?

Interesting......for years b4 wood pulp paper was made , paper was made from recycled clothing as rags and or flax. Now the Westen World has a problem with clothing waste and destroying wooden forests. One would think we'd go back to the past and use rags again to produce paper and cardboard. Bit like all our landfill....clever countries use high temperature incinerators to produce electricity with appropriate smoke filters. Chicago has been doing this for over 30 years! But mega companies like Harris Daishowa a Japanese wood pulp giant , would never imperil their licence to print money wood pulp plants and millions of acres of plantations and associated profits. So it's unlikely nothing will change. Global warming theory is NOT open mazare. Check out Scientist Ian Plimers papers for an alternative view. Somewhere in all the lies and subterfuge about Climate Change the real truth lies. God only knows where???

How much will this paper cost I wonder.

Why not. Everyone else is thinking up wacky ideas, what they don't tell us is how much greenhouse gas is going to be produced in manufacturing and operating these things. I hope that they intend to recycle the ink while they're at it, although vaporising it may complicate things. There are ways of reducing CO2 that cost nothing but the wise ones have never mentioned breathing slowly for a few minutes each day, that's free. Trees use their leaves to draw in CO2 and give out oxygen, what an amazing thing. Unless you happen to live in the Northern Hemisphere in Winter when all the deciduous trees have a holiday. How much cleaner would the air be if all these lazy trees were replaced with evergreens.

sounds like a carbon expensive process .... I assume it was toung in cheek!!!

What are the constituent gases in the vaporized ink? Could they be more dangerous than the CO2 levels?

Like many things that are supposed to be 'Green' it'll end up costing more and using more natural resources than current methods and will be quickly forgotten. Can't see it ever being used in the average home. The majority of trees which are cut down for human usage nowadays are specifically grown in plantations and therefore wouldn't have been planted otherwise, so by using plantation timber more we ARE caring for the planet.

Yes we have plantations of trees but the Amazon is cutting down their forests by acres every day. Columbia has just about cut all theirs down also. Even Australia does not have much rain forest left. These areas are the lungs of the world and should be saved and increased. As to the whacky ink thing, I wonder how long the ink would stay on the paper anyway. We seem to be putting everything on the internet so paper will not be required much in the near future one would think.

Actually, approximately 80% of the world's Oxygen comes from the ocean, from ocean plants, algae, plankton etc and grasses produce a sizable proportion of the remaining %. While I don't condone recklessly cutting down trees instead of planting more trees we should be looking at encouraging more investigation into cultivating phytoplankton. Trouble is the tree huggers will never agree to that because they can't noisily demonstrate or chain themselves to a piece of seaweed. LOL

Probably not much more than 50 %, and mostly from plankton, but certainly the majority of oxygen from the sea., but would like to know more about this ink idea and if it is effective at all as any improvements are worthwhile, and we need as many as possible and feasible..
