How is Reducing, Reusing and Recycling Helping To Keep Whales Top Of Mind?

This year, Moccona is donating $100,000 to a selection of environmental causes. One of them is ORRCA, which works hard to protect whales and other sea mammals. Whale faecal matter keeps us all alive. It’s full of nitrogen and iron, which plant plankton feed on (using photosynthesis, which produces oxygen). Krill eat that plankton, and whales and seals then feed on the krill. And given the ocean creates at least half of Earth’s oxygen, keeping that food chain functioning is of the utmost importance. Everything ORRCA does is about keeping the ocean’s delicate ecosystem alive and preserving our marine life for the next generation. Recycling is an easy first step for absolutely anyone here in Australia to start doing to protect our ocean and our ocean mammals. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? How is reducing, reusing and recycling helping to keep whales top of mind?

I don’t like the idea of ANY sea creatures being exposed to the possibility of consuming plastic. Plus, whales are necessary for the balance of nature.

I think we are inundated with save this or save that, recycle this or recycle that. I think the problem is people are lazy. I live near an aged care facility and the workers come out and sit opposite the building in the gutter, drop their cigarette butts and packets, masks, coffee cups, food containers etc. all over the ground and right next to a huge drain that goes directly into the ocean. I complained and it was cleaned up but as I have done this a few times it will once again become a tip .Plastics and especially micro plastic must be eliminated although it might be too late. These days people use wipes, disposable nappies etc. which take over 100 years to disintegrate so perhaps these too need to be eliminated. Use cloth nappies like I did and many before, use a flannel instead of wipes. Simple things which are cheaper in the long run and better for the environment. Our kelp fields actually reduce carbon and produce oxygen and they absorb more CO2 than trees. They are now being protected in small areas.

There are 4, not 3 R's. Refusing should be the first option ahead of reducing, reusing and recycling being the last option. We do it not just for the wonderful whales but for all life on earth. I am with Maryam; let's eliminate plastics from our lives for the sake of all living things.

I am all up for plastic elimination from our life. It’s bad for everyone including whales and other sea animals.

Recycling has become a way of life for many of us. Unfortunately it takes time & many families these days are time poor. They either don't recycle properly or don't recycle at all resulting in contamination of whole truck loads. Constant reminders via graphic advertising is probably the best way to encourage these people to improve. More companies need to follow Moccona's lead & tell the public about their initiatives thereby encouraging us all to do better !

Plastics are bad for every living animal, including humans. I wish they were never seen as a cheap alternative and the sooner they are all phased out the better.

We all need to do what we can, when we can. It is so disappointing to see rubbish tossed at the sides of roads, left on beaches etc. Simply disposing of our rubbish correctly would make such a difference and would be a great start but I'm at a loss to know how to inspire the 'tossers' to do the right thing :(

Any use of plastic is harmful to animals. It needs to all be phased out sooner rather than later.

Bottled water is a waste of money. Single use plastic bottles should be phased out completely, together with plastic plates, cups and cutlery. They are unnecessary and a leading contributor of ocean pollution.

i think of the whales and wildlife every time i make a purchase. we are aware of how plastic harms them and our water ways, and single use bags have been phased out at stores. plastic is the hardest to recycle and australia doesnt even recycle most of it. we need to be conscious that all packaging has to go somewhere. i think there needs to be an entire human conscious shift around re using materials, instead of throwing away and forgetting about where it goes next. i think my grandmother could teach as a thing or too. back in her day, everything was re used and mended to last as long as possible. she is still this way.

Reducing, Reusing and Recycling are helping sea animal not only whales, because we can get rid of wastes to recycle and reuse it again and again, so environment doesn't have much waste so that animals can live and alive.

Recycling and reuse need to be at the forefront of a lot of businesses and councils. I currently live i a remote location and there is not recycling at all places to recycle is anything environmental for bottle exchange. Council has funding and approval but still nothing done. Inactivity is do nothing is the problem we need to tackle first

I'm concerned about the amount of waste that ends up in our streets, creeks, waterways and eventually our oceans, how bad does it need to get for us all to realise that this waste is having an impact on all our marine life, and so impacting us, hopefully not before it's too late!!!

I think a lot about how a lot of waste ends up in oceans, which obviously negatively impacts marine animals and sea birds. Reducing, reusing and recycling is important to minimize our impact on these amazing animals, and something that is relatively easy for everyone to do.

recycling should be second nature, however i have heard a lot depends on the value of recyclables which get recycled and that needs to be seriously addressed

it really depends on how we recycle/reuse, and whether it generates more waste during recycling /reusing process. needs scientic investigation to adivse what is better approach to keep the whales top of mind.

recycling is always good, not just for protection of whales but keeping our wastes consumes more lands for landfills or ended up polluting the ocean. The greatest challenge in Australia is that every council has their own policies of recycling and what are accepted for recycling purposes. This doesn't make it consistent, easy and clear statewise. We still end up having a lot of things go to the landfills or ends up in the seas or oceans.
