How Did Uluru Form?

Uluru is the most iconic natural landform in Australia, and its formation is an equally special story of creation, destruction, and reinvention. The origins of Uluru (and Kata Tjuta) date back about 500 million years, to around the same time the Australian continent was formed. Large crustal blocks were merging to create the island of Australia; a process like the way India is ramming into the Eurasian continent today. As a result, Himalayan-sized Mountain ranges were being built. The rocky material that ultimately became Uluru and Kata Tjuta was in one of the mountain ranges formed which is the Petermann Ranges. The red colour of Uluru is due to the oxidation or the rusting of the iron-bearing minerals within the rock as it has sat there in the desert air for hundreds of thousands of years. What do you think LiveTribers? How did Uluru form?

I would imagine it was formed during the natural evolution of the planet as land masses separated into individual islands and continents which exist as we know them today.

Uluru is a large sedimentary deposit that has been tilted.

And how about all those fancy drone and light shows they hold there now? I suppose it’s supposed to be a world heritage site, won’t all this technology change the vibe?

Uluru is a ancient rock smack bang in centre of our country. And Im pretty sure it was made to be there for a reason,a very special place that has so much importance to our ancestors from long ago . Also to our indigenous peoples who care for it til this day, you'll find out the true answer of how and why it's where it is through our Dreamtime story's. Very powerful and strong for our people!! And goes deeper into the earth.

Volcanic material from underneath seemed out as the tectonic plates closed over and with the desert weather it was oxidised and formed its reddened colour.

From the description it sounds like a large blob of molten rock from the underneath of what later became mountain ranges was squeezed out between merging plates before they closed over. At that time Uluru wouls have to have been underground and cooled somewhat underground while the land lifted and eroded from wind and rain to expose the rock.

Volcanic eruptions forcing the geological rock closer to the earth's surface then wind rain and natural erosions to bring it to its present form. It is quite spectacular to see rising out of the landscape and amazing to see the cascades of water running down its sides when it is raining.

500 million years? How can you prove that in the first place? Carbon dating is full of assumptions. Nevertheless, Uluru is a majestic natural structure.

Uluru and Kata Tjuṯan are the remains of an ancient mountain range eroded with time by wind, rain and sands for millions of years. They truely are amazing and a must see if travelling around Australia. The red earth with the greenery is stunning. We were actually surprised how green it was when we were there in 2012 and we would have loved to have seen rain on Uluru but glad it didn't rain when we were there.
