How Can Stargazing And Looking Into The Night Sky Boost Mental Health And Wellbeing?

We don't yet know exactly how or why stargazing appears to boost wellbeing. However, an academic psychologist at the University of Derby in the UK says it could be a combination of the mindfulness people experience while stargazing and the emotional response some feel when looking to the heavens. Basically, the opportunity to be in the moment and experience awe when gazing skywards. It has been observed that the higher the connection that someone had to the natural environment at night, they felt happier and had a more positive outlook and a more positive wellbeing. What are your thoughts?  How can stargazing and looking into the night sky boost mental health and wellbeing?

it's a chance to look beyond yourself, to see beyond the earth's boundaries. To see the stars at night and question civilization. Even in the daytime you see the birds, the sun, what's out there?

I think that star gazing makes us fully realise just how insignificant we are in the whole scheme of things. Hopefully it pulls some people's alter egos back into the realm of normalcy.

When you’re lying on the earth and stare into the universe you feel that you’re never alone, never don’t matter cause we’re all connected to something somewhere somehow

How long do we have to wait for issues to fix and make reward redemption? All issues with the LiveTribe website have been there for more than 2 years as a member. I don't want to know what rubbish feature you introduce, but issues should be fixed. Dear LiveTribe Members, After 2 weeks of debugging and investigation, we are unable to identify the source of the technical glitch that is inadvertently redeeming points or unsubscribing accounts without member initiation. We will be introducing a new 'Secret Question' feature to counteract this technical glitch. Redemptions will be disabled until Friday, 27th September, whilst we develop our new feature. Watch this space! The LiveTribe Team

i-link research investigated on this issue for more than 2 years, and at the stage they realized they couldn't fix the issue, and they are losing all their members sold LiveTribe to PureProfile, I think. A couple of times my points are deleted, and I unsubscribe from my account, and it continues. Their IT team and management are continuously proving they are useless in this effort.

My account was closed by LiveTribe a couple of years ago for some unknown reason. However, I was lucky and a quick email to Livetribe and it was reinstated within a couple of days. Looks like the bug/feature is getting worse. Is it that their IT people aren't up to the job? I'm surprised that 'Anna' hasn't posted a poll about it. /s

My husband and I love looking at the night sky. We have seen some wonderful meteor showers (you have to get out of bed at some very early times), shooting stars, comets and satellites. We always look at moon eclipses and look for Southern Lights (sometimes seen by accident). We even watched a number of times as the Space Station went over and said a prayer for the people on board. It is very relaxing and we enjoy it immensely. Even looking at the night sky when theres are no shooting stars is relaxing. Even as a child I lived on a golf course (my father was the curator) and my sister and I used to lay on the fairway in the night (with a star book) and pick out all of the constellations. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. I can still pick out many of the constellations today.

Probably a similar relaxing response as watching tropical fish in a well set up aquarium. Perhaps stargazing will decrease sales of antineurotic medication?

It's called Skychology and it's not a new idea, it's been around for several years. All it does is make me realise how small our world is in comparison with the universe and the fact that we could go extinct tomorrow and not be missed by anyone. Unless you believe in flying saucers ;)

Could it be that for most of the last centaury people expected that when they died they would go to Heaven. Some people still believe it today so when they look up they not only see the vast expanse of the heavens they feel they not only have family and friends up there but that is where they will up.

I agree. I love looking at the night sky. do it a lot from my bedroom window. Occasionally I get to see a falling star or a satellite moving about. I love looking at the moon and the Milky Way too. It does keep your mind off everything else. It's a a great past time.

First of all, fix the technical issues with the LiveTribe website for months/years, then discuss other topics otherwise, you will face members mass exodus.
