How Can Rural Kids Waiting On Critical Development Services and Support Be Improved?

Natural disasters and the pandemic have compounded the scarcity of support for children in regional Australia, putting them at risk of a cycle of disadvantage. At a school in Warren, a teacher can tell which of her pupils haven't yet had luck accessing the help they need. And she states that there is a lot of them. She also states that it is this health and education support, regularly available in the city, that determines the course of a child's life. What they need is specialists who help children read and write, articulate themselves, regulate their emotions, and socialize. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? How can rural kids waiting on critical development services and support be improved?

The vaccine mandate needs to be lifted so that more teachers can return to school. At our primary school in Melbourne, they are short staffed. At the start of the year there was 4 tutors. Now we only have 1 to cover more than 900 students. She is only working with grade 1. Also specialist teachers have been diverted to teaching classes. There is no relief teachers. If a teacher is away, they have to add these children to all the other classes. Also the school principal is sometimes acting as a crossing supervisor because they sometimes can't find somebody because of the vaccine mandate. I can only imagine it would be worse in the country. People in Melbourne are struggling after 1 whole year of lockdown. There is less people to treat them too because of the vaccine mandate.

We need to educate parents, attract and keep good Health Professionals and carefully spend the Taxpayer dollar. More staff does not always equal better results .... it's true teaching ability and educating parents to be better that makes the difference.

I think natural disasters and the pandemic have compounded support for children in many areas. City children are not settling back in school and are way behind in their development. There needs to be a huge effort to help all children no matter city or rural or regional. Yes there are services in the cities but they are so flooded that many are missing out. Parents can help kids read and write. I read to/with my kids every night and they did their writing lessons every night as well. The pandemic did interupt social interations but these have since been negated by the fact the children are now back in schools and sports. We parents cannot rely on so called devolpment services all the time. We have to put the hard yards in as they are our children and our responsibility and it is time to stop passing them over all the time to outsiders.
