How Can Main Beach, Byron Bay Be Saved?

Byron Bay on the New South Wales coast is a popular surfing and tourism hotspot. But for the past six months, its most popular attraction, Main Beach has been steadily eroding. A Professor from the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management explained how his team had identified the cause of the erosion as a process called “headland bypassing”. Nature will ultimately save it. The normal waxing and waning of the offshore sandbar and normal seasonal tidal patterns will ensure the beaches return. In the meantime the LGAs should ban building of immediate foreshore based permanent structures. Let nature take its normal course and use commonsense living close to the sea.
