How Can Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles Save In CO2 Emissions?

It's a new hydrogen-diesel hybrid engine affectionately known as "baby number two" that could help to decarbonise some of Australia's heaviest industries. The test rig is large; it has its own room adjoining a lab and looks at first glance like many other large motors, but beneath its metallic skin could lie game-changing technology. Engineers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) say they have successfully modified a conventional diesel engine to use a mix of hydrogen and a small amount of diesel, claiming their patented technology has cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 85%. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? How can hydrogen-powered vehicles save in CO2 emissions?

CO2 isn't proven. The politicians and media are lying. So this vehicle that you mentioned isn't important.

When you think of the Hindenberg years ago, what was the gas they used, Hydrogen. I would not put hydrogen gas in my car for the fact that it is dangerous and may cause fires or worse. Just saying

It is interesting. How about using in smaller cars?

I'm not too sure about it. Sounds complicated

In theory this is a good try as the waste product from hydrogen powered vehicles is water vapour. A product which the planet needs to survive. The shear size of the demonstration unit is the problem, however over time and development, this could be reduced in size and weight to a manageable size and have potential usage.

Any technology in producing energy that don’t rely on fossil fuel or lithium batteries are beneficial in reduction of co2 emissions

It sounds good I theory but will be too costly and use more power and water to produce the hydrogen so I can’t see it being successful.

The problem with this is that it is only a small test model. It is probably decades away from being useful on a large scale.

Hydrogen is so volatile and I wonder if this is a good idea or not. 85% is fantastic but how much is it going to cost to convert the amount of trucks we have on our roads. Surely using some other type of transport to get the trucks off our poor bashed up highways and motorways would help just as much.

A lot more money will have to be spent and research done before Hydrogen can be regarded as a safe fuel for vehicles. A bench test under ideal laboratory conditions rarely works in real life as producing and the transport and storage of such a highly flammable and explosive gas is a major obstacle that may never be overcome for general public use.

There are a couple of things wrong with this proposal. Firstly you need huge amounts of water and power in order to make hydrogen, and so far the technology hasn't been very sucessful.

Finally a topic with real meaty potential...... yesssssss......this technology should be pursued and enabled. Plus why not convert conventional turbo diesels while we are at it.....But of course the Multinational car companies and fuel merchants would kybosh this idea real quick ..... Eh!?
