How Can Boosting Deep Sleep Help Stop Dementia?

The biological ‘brainwashing’ that happens while you are sleeping is crucial for filtering out toxins. Deep sleep isn’t only important for keeping the brain clean. We release growth hormone during it, helping to repair muscles, bones and immune cells. Deep sleep is also considered important for memory consolidation and the regulation of blood glucose. So, what if scientists could find a way to reboot deep sleep as we get older? A sleep researcher at the University of Cardiff, believes this could be possible. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? How can boosting deep sleep help stop dementia?

Deep sleep builds up melatonin which is very crucial in preventing dementia.

I’d be part of this trial. I wake up more tired than before I went to sleep. It’s rarely refreshing

My sleep is terrible at the moment, yet I was always a great sleeper when I was younger, go figure! If only there were a way to tune out from everyday stresses, I would love to improve my sleep as I get older so I can focus better.

This is one trial I would happily agree to if it could help dementia from setting in. I will await more information on this subject.

I hope they can come up with something. I tend to wake up several times during the night and it's sometimes hard to get back to sleep. Dementia runs in my family so it does concern me.

Dementia is most likely caused by subtle brain hypoxia commonly caused by excessive smoking ,poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and alcohol abuse. Commonly attributed to a Western Lifestyle. Do we ever learn???

My late mother had dementia for more than a decade before she passed away, none of any specialist or doctor mentioned this treatment. Ironically, dementia had turned around her normal activities and sleep patterns, she became an overly active owl at nights while slept mostly in daytimes. As far as my family observed, she slept like a baby during daytime. I wasn't sure whether she had 'deep' sleeps. Seeing her regression over years, I doubt whether it helped at all. There are too many theories about how to prevent dementia, or relief dementia patients sufferings but so far none of them are conclusive.

If scientists can truly find a way to help deep sleep, I am absolutely thrilled. My sleep is very bad and I can sleep only few hours at night time. Really need a therapy for this issue.

From my own observation of Dementia sufferers, deep sleep is the one thing that they probably get more of than anybody else; it's just that they get it at times not necessarily convenient to everybody else around them.

I think I am doomed. I manage only 3-4 hours of broken sleep most nights. I have tried everything to get a good nights sleep but nothing works. This link to dementia is very worrying to me

This makes perfect sense. Sleep is the least rated way to help the body rest and recuperate. It is essential for physical, mental and spiritual well being.

Interesting...I can see how the two could be linked. I'd be curious to see if this would be able to reverse the impact of a lack of deep sleep during a person's life, potentially lowering the risk of dementia. I hope this research gets funding as it sounds promising!

I'd like to see a link to this 'sleep researcher's' work as well as know what their qualifications are before making my mind up as to if this is an official University of Cardiff recommendation or the thoughts of just one person. Hoping it's true but need more evidence before believing anything I read on the Internet.

How many hours is enough? Everyone is different, depending on age, weight etc. I think we can all agree that as long as we feel rested, then that's all that matters.

Whe you sleep your brain is resting so this is conducive to combating dementia. Broken sleep makes you cranky and moody,so not good for the brain.

As a teen and young adult I could sleep long hours when I didn't have to get up early. Sometimes I would sleep until almost lunchtime. Now I have to get up several times during the night and it's always hard to get back into a deep sleep. Dementia runs in my family so it is a concern for me that I may follow in the path of my father and sister. Whenever I see stories in the news about dementia it always catches my attention and I always try to do what people suggest to help prevent it happening to me.

Putting aside any activities by scientists, a good starting point to improve sleep and reap the associated benefits would be implementing digital detox and other good sleep habits. However, I would be very wary of drug-related "solutions" to improve sleep......to date, too many sleeping drugs have caused greater problems than they have solved.

As a health care professional I have had 35+ years of either working night shift or being on call. It is a known fact that we put our health at rick and reduce our life span. So a way to reboot deep sleep would have many health benefits not just dementia mitigation.

I wear an Oura smart ring while sleeping. It tracks my sleep pattern and allows me to see how much deep sleep I am getting. I was surprised to find that some nights I was only getting 1.5hr of deep sleep per night! I would love to know more about this
